Designing Homepage, Category, and Author Feed Layouts
Configure magazine-style grid layouts for your homepage, category hubs, and author pages using the visual Layout Builder in Site Settings.
Modern Blogging includes a flexible 4-column grid system that lets you arrange post feeds into editorial magazine layouts without writing CSS.
How the Visual Layout Builder Works
In Site Settings under Feed Layouts, you can configure three independent layouts:
- Homepage Layout: Controls the post arrangement on your main blog index.
- Default Category Layout: Controls the default grid for all category pages (individual categories can also override this in the Category editor).
- Author Page Layout: Controls the post feed below the author bio header.
Row Types and Column Proportions
Each row in the layout builder consumes posts in chronological order from newest to oldest:
Row Pattern | Posts Used | Visual Presentation |
1 Column (Hero / River) | 1 post | Full-width hero feature card at the top, or compact horizontal river row below |
2 Columns (Equal 1:1) | 2 posts | Two equal-width feature cards side by side |
2 Columns (Wide Left 3:1) | 2 posts | 75% primary story on the left, 25% secondary story on the right |
2 Columns (Wide Right 1:3) | 2 posts | 25% secondary story on the left, 75% primary story on the right |
3 Columns | 3 posts | Three balanced story cards across the row |
4 Columns | 4 posts | Four compact cards in a single row |
Automatic Overflow and Chronological River
If a page has more posts than the rows defined in your layout pattern (up to your configured Posts Per Page limit), all remaining posts on that page automatically render in a clean chronological river below a "The Latest" divider so no published post is ever hidden.
